Kailua-Kona is our home town. Ceramic and ceramic IR tint, UPPF and STEK paint protection film, ceramic coatings, wraps and detailing — installed a few minutes up the hill in Holualoa.
Kailua-Kona sits at sea level on the leeward side of the island, which is a polite way of saying it is sunny, dry and hot almost every day of the year. Hawaii records the highest average UV levels of any state, and Kona summers push the index into the extreme band. A vehicle parked along Aliʻi Drive or in a shopping centre lot at midday is absorbing everything the sky can deliver, through every piece of glass it has.
That is the case for ceramic film in one sentence. What surprises people is that they do not need to break the law to feel it: a quality ceramic at a legal 35% rejects far more heat than a cheap dark film, because heat rejection and darkness are two different properties. The other upgrade almost nobody asks for by name is a clear 70% ceramic windshield film — the windshield is the largest piece of glass on the vehicle and it points at the sky, so it is where the heat actually gets in.
Being a coastal town, Kona vehicles also live in salt air, and the town sits downwind of Kīlauea's emissions often enough that vog is a normal part of the week. Neither is dramatic on its own; together they are why paint here benefits from a ceramic coating and why front ends that see highway miles benefit from paint protection film. We are ten to fifteen minutes above town on the Māmalahoa Highway, so dropping a vehicle off on the way into your day is straightforward.
